I’ve always enjoyed working with wood, learning my craft working for a specialist joiner and talented woodcarver until I decided I was confident and competent enough to go it alone.
Years experience in restoration and joinery
In 1989 I rented a small workshop and bought some basic machinery to get started as a joiner, specialising in furniture restoration projects, but happy to take on commissions for new furniture and fittings.
Now, 35 years later, I have built up a store of valuable experience and knowledge of my craft, along with a wide range of contacts in various related fields whose expertise, and patronage, is always welcome and useful.
I still work alone in my workshop in Wells, thoroughly enjoying immersing myself in every project, whether it is making a piece of contemporary domestic furniture for a homeowner, re-finishing an antique long case clock or carving an intricate altar for a church.
One of the aspects of my job that I really enjoy is interacting and collaborating with my customers, because I believe strongly in delivering a personalised service.
I travel all over the UK to “rescue” furniture for restoration, usually bringing it back to my workshop in Wells having discussed in depth with the client what will be involved in returning it to its former glory.
I also take on commissions for constructing new wood furniture pieces, custom made to the client’s specification. These special unique pieces can include anything from dining tables and consoles to desks and storage solutions for awkward spaces.
In some cases I am happy to work on site to restore or repair quality wood fittings or features. I once worked with a well-known local company of stonemasons on a joinery project destined for Hong Kong.
I’m fortunate to have learned all the skills I need to carry out high quality furniture restoration and bespoke furniture manufacture from experts, and have continued to improve my knowledge and dexterity through experience over the years. I particularly enjoy woodcarving and wood turning, and working on architectural wood features.
In addition to having the capability, I have had to build up my confidence because it is a big responsibility to work on a significant piece of furniture which has either monetary or sentimental value (or in many cases both). I’m also pleased to be trusted by clients to manufacture new pieces of furniture that may, hopefully, become antiques of the future.
I enjoy taking on any challenge, and am proud of being able to conserve so many wonderful pieces that are brought to me with issues like wobbly legs, scratches and dents, discolouration or fading or any other sort of damage caused by old age, the environment or accidental damage.
If you have a piece of old furniture which requires some tender loving care, or need a special bespoke piece of furniture, I’d love to discuss your requirements.
