A key aspect of my work is creating custom-designed and fabricated timber items for new buildings or for renovation and restoration projects in period properties – including listed buildings.
Most of the work is done in my workshop in Wells, Somerset, using specialised tools and techniques as appropriate, before I assemble and install the commissioned structure or fixture on site, ensuring proper fit and functionality.
I manufacture a large range of items, most of them unique and bespoke, with or without decorative detailing, including:
My joinery expertise – honed over decades of experience in the trade – includes competence in technical drawing and the ability to interpret complex designs, both working with modern CAD software or traditional blueprints, in order to translate clients’ visions into practical working plans.
I also understand different types of wood and their properties, am able to identify grain patterns and potential defects, and know where and how to source suitable sustainable, certified timber.
Once at work on a bespoke joinery project I ensure absolute accuracy in measuring and marking using a combination of traditional and modern tools and equipment as appropriate to achieve quality and consistency.
Joinery has become very technical with so many regulations to comply with relating to glazing, insulation and ventilation. Listed buildings come with another set of guidelines relating more to retaining the original aesthetic and traditional methods such as puttied-in single glazing.
I am experienced in all these methods and am happy to work with architects and designers when necessary.
In both old buildings and new builds the timeless beauty of timber is highly valued in construction for exterior features, from cladding and stairways to window frames, doors and decking.
As a joiner I believe wood fixtures and fittings are an eco-friendly, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing choice which complement any style of property. Exterior timber features like porches, doors or windows can be custom made by a joiner for homeowners who value individuality and/or authenticity.
Those who fear that using timber externally would be too high maintenance or not durable can rest assured: Modern coatings are an improvement on traditional paints and provide much more durable finishes to preserve exterior timber items. These can be rollered, brushed or sprayed on.
Also, recent developments of so called ‘modified timbers’ such as Accoya (pine that is non-toxically chemically treated to make it resistant to decay) ensure the longevity of exterior joinery.
I would be happy to discuss your requirements, be they for a modern new build or ancient listed building.
