To discuss your project
I take on a wide variety of furniture restoration projects from all over the country – some from individuals, others from organisations like libraries and museums, managers of heritage buildings, interior designers, architects and all sorts of other sources.
The furniture I work on comes from many vintages, from valuable antiques to precious period pieces cherished by a family, or even modern designer pieces that have suffered neglect or accidental damage and are worthy of repair.
I take the same approach with every furniture restoration project that I undertake in my workshop in Wells, Somerset. My aim is always to restore furniture without compromising its authenticity. That means not only using era-appropriate materials and techniques, but also perhaps retaining the patina and some marks of age for the sake of character.
It’s a meticulous but satisfying process, requiring a combination of skills, to bring old, damaged and distressed pieces of furniture back to life and ensure their ongoing longevity.
During its lifetime any piece of furniture falls victim to damage and/or wear and tear, and the older it is the more harm is likely to have befallen it.
I have the knowledge, cabinet making expertise, equipment and resources to rectify all sorts of structural and finishing issues, for example:
However bad the damage is I will make every effort to preserve as much of the original construction as possible, and ensure that the repaired areas blend in seamlessly. My quest is to always remain respectful of the history of the piece and bear testament to the mastery of the original maker.
When you contact me regarding the restoration of a piece of furniture I’ll assess the project and work out an estimate for the work. If you decide to go ahead, I’ll collect the piece – no matter where you are in the UK – and bring it to my fully equipped restoration workshop in Wells, Somerset.
We’ll have a full discussion about what work will be required to rejuvenate your piece of furniture, and I’ll explain the techniques I use, such as turning a new chair leg, spindles or knobs; replacing veneer and marquetry; French polishing for a fine finish; or wood carving to repair damaged decoration.
If the piece is not portable I can discuss arrangements for working on it on site if possible.
I’ll keep you apprised of progress regularly while I’m busy carefully restoring your treasured piece of furniture, and when it is satisfactorily completed, I’ll deliver it back to you to enjoy for posterity.
